Opium is a highly addictive narcotic drug acquired in the dried latex form of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) seed pod. Heroin is derived from the morphine alkaloid found in opium; synthetic or semisynthetic opium derivatives include fentanyl, methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone.
